Sunyani, (Bono), Sept. 22, GNA – Authorities at the Sunyani Central Prison have reminded the public that anybody, regardless of their social or economic background, could end up in prison and appealed for support to improve conditions at the facility.
They appealed to individuals, organisations and other benevolent institutions to support the upkeep of inmates, particularly with food, toiletries and other consumables.
“In fact, prison is an extension of society, and everybody can be here regardless of their background,” Assistant Superintendent of Prisons (ASP) Reverend Father Emmanuel Asare Bediako, the Chaplain of the Prison, said.
ASP Rev Fr Bediako, popularly known at the Prison as “Obama”, made the appeal in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sunyani after the Clap for Jesus Fun Club donated assorted items to the facility.
The items comprised bags of maize, gallons of cooking oil, sardines, second-hand clothing, footwear and other consumables.
ASP Rev Fr Bediako said although the Government provided support for feeding the inmates, it was inadequate to meet their needs and, therefore, appealed for additional assistance.
He said the Ghana Prisons Service remained grateful to individuals and institutions that continued to support the daily upkeep of inmates.
The Prison, however, needed more food items, including maize, gari and rice, as well as toiletries such as washing powder and soap, he said.
ASP Rev Fr Bediako said the Government alone could not shoulder the responsibility of caring for inmates, stressing that their reformation and proper upkeep required the collective support of society.
He expressed appreciation to the Club for the donation and expressed the hope that it would continue supporting the inmates to live dignified lives.
Mr Kwabena Owusu Ansah, Chairman of the Clap for Jesus Fun Club, said the group was an all-male social and philanthropic organisation comprising professionals from various fields.
He said the Club prioritised initiatives that identified and supported vulnerable and less-privileged people to improve their livelihoods.
