Agbozume (V/R), Sept. 28, GNA – The Somè Traditional Area has celebrated the 2026 edition of Somètutuza with a renewed call for unity, peaceful coexistence and collective efforts towards the development of the area.
The grand celebration brought together traditional rulers, citizens, friends of Somè and other guests to reflect on the history, cultural identity and sacrifices of their forebears.
Togbui Geli III, Chairman of the Somètutuza 2026 Planning Committee, in a welcome address, expressed appreciation to the guests and all those who participated in the celebration.
According to oral tradition, the ancestors of the Somè people migrated through Ketu, Notsie, Tsevie, Ayigida and Keta before eventually settling in their present location.
The oral account indicates that in 1792, a conflict broke out between the forebears of the Somè people, then known as the Ketawo, and the Danes, compelling them to move to Yegbefume.
The area was noted for its abundance of sun palms, locally known as “sove”, and the settlement later became known as Somè, with its inhabitants referred to as Somèawo.
Torgbiga Adamah was later identified as the founder of Somè, while Agbozume became the spiritual and administrative capital of the Somè Traditional Area.
Activities marking this year’s celebration included traditional rituals, prayers in churches and mosques, cultural performances, sporting activities, musical events, arts and crafts exhibitions and other community-centred programmes.
Togbui Geli III commended the chiefs, queen mothers, elders, youth, volunteers, security agencies and other stakeholders for their contributions towards the organisation of the festival.
He also expressed appreciation to Somè citizens at home and abroad for their financial, material, and moral support towards the celebration.
