Accra, Sept. 22, GNA – Preparatory work for the construction of a new 400-bed maternity block at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, to expand and modernise maternal and neonatal healthcare services has begun.
It would be recalled that on July 9, President John Dramani Mahama, at the commissioning of CathLab in Korle Bu, announced the Government’s commitment to construct a new maternity block to replace the existing facility.
The Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in a statement said in fulfilment of that commitment, a site had been allocated and formally handed over to the contractor, with clearing already underway.
It said the new block would be equipped with modern medical technology and purpose-built facilities to support the delivery of comprehensive, specialised care to women and newborns.
It said the proposed facility would comprise: Obstetrics and Gynaecology wards; labour and delivery suites; operating theatres, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a High Dependency Unit.
Others are an Intensive Care Unit; an In Vitro Fertilisation and Assisted Reproductive Technology Centre; and antenatal and postnatal clinics.
The rest would be fertility and reproductive health clinics; breastfeeding and family planning units; an Emergency Obstetric Care Unit; a Diagnostic Imaging Department; laboratory and blood bank facilities; a Pharmacy Department; a Central Sterile Services Department; physiotherapy and rehabilitation units; and teaching, research, and conference facilities.
The statement said when completed, the new maternity block is expected to significantly enhance Korle Bu’s capacity to provide advanced maternal, reproductive, and neonatal healthcare.
It would also strengthen clinical training and research while offering patients and healthcare professionals a safer, more efficient, and modern environment.
The statement said the Board, Management, staff, and patients of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital express our profound gratitude to President Mahama, for this major investment in healthcare infrastructure.
It said the Hospital was confident that the new facility would strengthen its position as a leading centre for maternal and neonatal healthcare and bring its services in line with those of the world’s foremost healthcare institutions.
