Appiahkrom (Bono), Sept. 24, GNA – Madam Fidelia Graand-Galon, the Suriname Ambassador to Ghana, has performed a groundbreaking ceremony for work to begin on the development of a modern city at Appiahkrom in the Dormaa Traditional Area.
The development of the 20-acre site forms part of efforts to reunite the ancestry of the “Ansu family” in the Republic of Suriname and their relatives in Dormaa-Ahenkro.
Nana Adwoa Taabea I, the Gyaase Mankro Hemaa (sub-queen) of the Dormaa Traditional Area, initiated the family reconnection two years ago.
Historical accounts trace the lineage between the Ansu families in Dormaa-Ahenkro and Suriname, with both sharing common cultural traditions and belief systems.
The colourful ceremony, dubbed “Suriname Homecoming,” was held at Appiahkrom, near Duasidan in the Bono Region, to strengthen the bond between the two families.
Madam Graand-Galon expressed appreciation to the Dormaa Traditional Area for the warm reception and thanked Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, Paramount Chief of the Area, for releasing the land for the project.
She said Suriname remained committed to building a befitting city in the area.
“This is why the Paramount Chief of Okanisi Maroons in Suriname delegated others to represent him and be witnesses to this historic occasion,” she said.
Madam Graand-Galon invited Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II and his sub-chiefs and divisional chiefs to visit Gaanman Bono Valantie, Paramount Chief of Okanisi Maroons in Suriname, to further strengthen the ancestral bond for mutual benefit.
Earlier, the Ambassador paid a courtesy call on Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II at the Abanpredease Palace in Dormaa-Ahenkro.
Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II pledged to release more land for investments, cultural exchange programmes and development projects.
He expressed the hope that the development of the city would deepen bilateral relations between Ghana and Suriname for their mutual benefit.
The Paramount Chief expressed excitement about the project and pledged his support towards its successful completion.
He said he was optimistic that the reunion would open new avenues for the exchange of ideas, strengthen family ties, boost investments, and promote socio-economic growth and development.
