Prioritize local SHS choices – La MP

Accra, Sept. 17, GNA – Madam. Rita Naa Odoley Sowa, Deputy Minister of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has urged parents and guardians to prioritise Senior High Schools (SHSs) within their regions when making choices for their wards.

She said the approach would help reduce the difficulties associated with changing schools after students had been placed through the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS).

Madam Sowah, also the Member of Parliament for LA Dade-Kotopon, made the call when she presented assorted items to more than 400 Junior High School (JHS) graduates from her constituency in the Greater Accra, who had gained admission to various SHSs across the country.

The items included mattresses, blankets and provisions such as oats, sugar, beverages and detergents to support the students as they prepared to begin their secondary education.

Addressing parents, guardians and students at the presentation, Madam Sowah said the Government remained committed to ensuring the well-being of Ghanaians and providing every qualified child with access to secondary education.

She said selecting schools within a student’s current region could make the placement process easier and reduce the likelihood of parents having to seek changes when their wards were placed in schools they did not initially prefer.

Madam Sowah, however, assured parents that all qualified candidates would be placed in SHSs.

She urged parents and guardians to remain calm during the placement process and cooperate with the relevant authorities to ensure a smooth transition for their wards.

On the distribution of the items, she explained that following an auditing process, parents and students who were unable to receive their share during the initial presentation would be attended to.

She encouraged the students to take their studies seriously and make good use of the opportunities provided to them.

Madam Sowah said the Government was implementing measures aimed at making secondary education more accessible and comfortable for students across the country.

Some parents expressed appreciation to the MP and the Government for the support, saying the items would help reduce the financial burden associated with preparing their wards for SHS.

They said the gesture had come at a time when many families were preparing to meet several expenses associated with the transition from JHS to SHS.
