Accra, Sept. 29, GNA – The Ghana Police Service has arrested 64 suspects, including an alleged impersonator of police officer, and recovered firearms and ammunition during a special operation at Achimota in Accra.
The suspects were arrested for alleged unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition at a lounge near Achimota Mile 7 and its surroundings.
A statement issued by the Police said the operation was conducted by the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the Inspector-General of Police (SOA), in collaboration with the National SWAT.
The operation followed complaints from residents about suspected criminal activities at the lounge and its surroundings, including the open display and possible trading of firearms.
The statement said one of the suspects, identified as Theophilus Ashon, presented himself as a police officer attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).
Checks, however, established that he was not a police officer.
A search on Ashon led to the recovery of a Smith & Wesson pistol loaded with six rounds of 9mm ammunition, the statement said.
“Further investigations led Police to Atico, where another suspect, Michael Emmanuel Kingsley Mills, was arrested,” it said.
A search of Mills’ residence resulted in the recovery of three pump-action guns, four pistols, 62 AA and BB cartridges, 54 rounds of .40-calibre ammunition and other exhibits.
The statement said the suspects were in police custody assisting with investigations and would be put before the court.
It said the Police also identified a blue, unregistered Acura vehicle at the scene, with a pistol holster inside.
The vehicle was impounded and taken to the Police Headquarters for further investigation after no person at the scene claimed ownership of the holster.
