Prampram, Sept. 30, GNA-The Ningo-Prampram District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitised more than 30 women on the importance of the rule of law and the need to help fight corruption in their communities.
The programme brought together queen mothers, hairdressers, seamstresses, traders, and other women groups to discuss the effects of corruption and the role of citizens in promoting accountable governance.
Mr Oppong Mensah, District Director, NCCE, Ningo-Prampram, underscored the relevance of the programme, saying similar sensitisation activities would soon be replicated in other communities within the district.
Mr Mensah said corruption and corrupt practices were affecting the development of the country and had gradually eaten into the social fabric of communities, stressing that urgent measures were needed to curb the menace.
According to him, citizens in various sectors of the economy were involved in corrupt practices in the performance of their duties.
Mr Mensah noted that corruption was not only synonymous with politicians but was a practice that could be found across different sections of society.
He called on the participants to respect the rule of law and report suspected corrupt practices to the appropriate authorities for the necessary action to be taken.
“Artisans, drivers, passengers, public servants and religious leaders, among others, are involved in corrupt practices,” he said, adding that the situation was affecting the progress and development of the country.
The NCCE district director urged the women to use their influence within their families and communities to promote integrity, accountability, and respect for the law.
The participants were given the opportunity to ask questions, share personal experiences, and make suggestions on measures that could help address corruption and strengthen adherence to the rule of law.
The engagement formed part of efforts by the NCCE to educate citizens on their civic responsibilities and encourage active participation in promoting good governance.
The programme was sponsored by the European Union, the Ministry of Finance, GIZ and the German Consulate.
