Somanya (E/R), Sept. 18, GNA – Dr. Albert Tetteh Nyakotey, the Member of Parliament for Yilo Krobo, has presented educational materials to 550 newly admitted Senior High School (SHS) students in the constituency under his annual back-to-school support programme.
The beneficiaries were presented with chop boxes, mattresses, mathematical sets, exercise books, and other essential learning materials at a ceremony held at Akutunya Park in Somanya.
The initiative, which began in 2021, aims to reduce the financial burden on parents and ensure that students enter SHS with the basic items needed for academic life.
Speaking at the presentation, Dr. Nyakotey said the programme was introduced after he received repeated requests from parents and students seeking assistance before reporting to secondary school.
He said the first edition supported 250 students, but growing demand had led to a significant increase in beneficiaries.
“It has become a tradition for me to support SHS students in my constituency. We started with 250 beneficiaries, and today, we are supporting 550 students. My target is to reach over 1,000 beneficiaries next year,” he said.
The MP described education as his top development priority, stressing that investing in young people was the surest way to empower communities and create opportunities for future generations.
Dr. Nyakotey announced that an additional 50 students who were not initially captured in the selection process would also receive support after presenting the required documents
He further disclosed that he had formally written to the Volta River Authority (VRA) and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to seek support for the renovation of deteriorating educational infrastructure across the constituency.
According to him, improving classroom facilities alongside student welfare would enhance teaching and learning in Yilo Krobo.
Mr. John Kwame Gasu, the Yilo Krobo Municipal Director of Education, commended the MP for sustaining the initiative and described it as a timely intervention for students transitioning to SHS.
He urged the beneficiaries to remain disciplined, study diligently, and make good use of the opportunity while encouraging parents and guardians to continue supporting their children throughout their secondary education.
