Yamfo (A/R), Sept. 16, GNA – The MISORNU Safety Center , a public service non- governmental organisation dedicated to preventive, safety and security awareness, has completed a two-day training programme at Yamfo in the Ahafo Region for more than 500 members of the National Cadet Corps.
The training, held from Sept 6 – 7, formed part of the National Cadet Corps’ annual leadership programme aimed at developing disciplined and responsible student leaders to contribute positively to their schools and communities.
The cadets, drawn from eleven regions across the country, were taken through Conflict Prevention, Emotional Intelligence, Leadership, Security and Safety Awareness.
That was to equip them with practical skills to recognise warning signs, manage emotions, resolve disagreements peacefully, make responsible decisions, and respond appropriately to safety concerns.
The programme also sought to broaden the traditional understanding of cadet training beyond marching, drills, and ceremonial discipline by positioning the members as peer leaders, safety ambassadors, and responsible citizens capable of positively influencing their colleagues.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) David Senanu Eklu (Rtd), the Executive Director, MISORNU Safety Centre, said the training reflected the Center’s preventive security philosophy of developing young people’s capacity to identify risks and warning signs before they resulted in conflict, crime, violence, or other harm.
“We want to move cadet training beyond marching and ceremonial discipline. We want to help develop young preventive leaders who can recognise warning signs, manage conflict, control their emotions, make responsible decisions, and contribute to safer schools and communities,” he said.
DCOP Eklu said building a safety-first mindset among young people could complement the work of the Police, other security agencies, and the Ghana Education Service (GES) by encouraging individual responsibility for safety in schools, homes, and communities.
MISORNU also introduced the EveryDay Lens – Cadet Edition, a leadership, character-development, and preventive safety newsletter designed specifically for members of the National Cadet Corps.
The newsletter translates real Ghanaian experiences into practical lessons in mediation, emotional intelligence, leadership, and preventive security and safety, following the learning sequence “Observe → Understand → Learn → Prevent → Lead.”
ACP Thomas Obah, the Yamfo Divisional Police Commander, officially launched the newsletter, describing it as an important contribution to youth leadership and safety education.
He reminded the cadets that the Police alone could not build safe communities and that safety also depended on the everyday choices made by individuals in their schools, homes, on the roads, online, and in their communities.
ACP Obah linked the initiative to the theme of this year’s National Cadet Corps camp, “Truth and Honesty,” emphasising that truth and honesty were the foundations of trust, effective leadership, peaceful relationships, and responsible citizenship.
He encouraged the cadets to use the newsletter as a practical leadership tool and not merely as reading material.
“Read it, reflect on it, discuss it, practise its lessons, and demonstrate them through your conduct,” he said, adding that good leadership involved recognising risks early and taking responsible action before harm occurred.
The EveryDay Lens – Cadet Edition is expected to sustain the lessons from the training through continuing education in areas including conflict prevention, peer mediation, emotional intelligence, communication, teamwork, digital citizenship, responsible decision-making, and personal resilience.
The broader objective is to help develop a generation of disciplined and safety-conscious young Ghanaians to understand that leadership includes conflict prevention, choosing dialogue over confrontation, and contributing to safer and more peaceful schools and communities.
