Kpone, Sept. 23, GNA — The Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Assembly (KKMA), in collaboration with the Municipal Education Directorate, has distributed furniture and exercise books to 57 public schools within the municipality.
The intervention forms part of the assembly’s efforts to improve the learning environment and promote quality education in the municipality.
Mr Samuel T.K. Morton, the Kpone-Katamanso Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), said the assembly had procured the first batch of furniture in fulfilment of the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) directives to support public schools.
He said the items comprised 500 mono desks and chairs, 350 dual desks, 140 teachers’ tables and chairs, and 180 hexagonal tables and chairs for kindergarten pupils, in addition to exercise books.
Mr Morton said plans were underway to procure a second batch of furniture, with the assembly targeting not less than 2,000 pieces for public schools between now and next year.
He said the intervention formed part of efforts to augment furniture in schools and improve teaching and learning.
The MCE, however, cautioned pupils against vandalising school property, particularly furniture, at the end of their academic year.
He said the education directorate had assured the assembly that the furniture would be put to good use, adding that the assembly had also engaged artisans within the municipality to undertake maintenance works at beneficiary schools.
“We are just not giving it out for it to be used, but we are going to make sure we partner the various public schools receiving the furniture so that maintenance also becomes part of it,” he said.
Mr Morton also commended pupils in the municipality for their performance in the recent 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), saying the KKMA would continue to support the education directorate to improve academic outcomes.
He said during his first year in office, he agreed with the directorate to intensify the MCE’s mock examinations to prepare candidates for the BECE.
The MCE stated that the assembly would continue to support measures aimed at improving academic performance, with the objective of positioning the municipality to compete for more national awards in education.
Mr Harry Evans Arthur, the Municipal Director of Education, commended the KKMA for the furniture and named some of the beneficiary schools as Kpone Methodist ‘A’ Basic School, Katamanso Presby JHS, Gonteng Basic School, Zenu ‘3’ JHS and Santeo KKMA Primary School.
Mr Arthur said the latest intervention was the seventh time the KKMA had procured furniture and other learning materials to support education in the municipality.
He said furniture and other learning materials were essential to effective teaching and learning and appealed to the assembly to continue supporting schools.
“Teaching and learning can never be effective without furniture, so we are grateful to the assembly for what they have done, but we can only ask them to do more,” he said.
Mr Arthur also described the municipality’s performance in this year’s BECE as impressive, saying the reported pass rate had risen to more than 90 per cent, compared with about 69 per cent before he assumed office.
He attributed the improvement to intensive supervision and monitoring, one-on-one discussions and support from the assembly and the education directorate, and commended teachers for their efforts.
Mr Arthur expressed the hope that continued support and appropriate measures would help Kpone-Katamanso gain national recognition for quality and improved education.
