Denu (V/R), Sept. 17, GNA – Pupils and teachers of the Denu Chicago Basic School in the Ketu South Municipality are to have safer access to sanitation facilities following the completion of a four-unit modern toilet block for the school.
The facility, constructed through a joint intervention by the Ras Muta Foundation and the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation, was handed over to the school on Wednesday.
Mr Prosper Mensah, Headteacher of the school, said the absence of an appropriate toilet facility had been a major challenge for several years, creating safety and logistical difficulties for both pupils and teachers.
He said pupils sometimes had to leave the school compound to access toilet facilities elsewhere, exposing them to danger because the school was located along a major road.
Mr Mensah said there had been instances where pupils going outside the school in search of toilet facilities had narrowly escaped accidents involving motorcycles and vehicles.
He said teachers were also affected, as some had to leave the school during working hours to access toilet facilities outside the premises.
The Headteacher said the new facility would therefore address not only the school’s sanitation needs but also safety concerns associated with pupils and teachers leaving the compound.
He expressed appreciation to the Ras Muta Foundation and the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation for responding to the school’s long-standing need and assured them that the school would maintain the facility properly.
Mr Seth Darlington Nyasorgbor, who led the Ras Muta Foundation, said the intervention was undertaken to provide a useful facility that would benefit the school and the wider community.
Mr N.K.K. Gidiglo, speaking on behalf of the Ras Muta Foundation and the Nyasorgbor family, said the project formed part of efforts to honour the memory of the late Edem Divine Nyasorgbor, popularly known as Ras Muta.
He said the family considered the provision of a facility that directly improved the wellbeing of pupils and the community a meaningful way of preserving his legacy.
Mr Israel Selikem Bossman, Assembly Member for the Denu Electoral Area and leader of the Denu Nugoryiyi Foundation, thanked the Ras Muta Foundation for its contribution towards the project.
He assured the school community of his support towards the proper maintenance of the facility.
The school presented citations to the two foundations in appreciation of their contribution.
Pupils and staff also expressed gratitude to the foundations, saying the facility would improve sanitation and reduce the risks associated with leaving the school premises to access toilets.
