Tweapease, (Ahafo), Sept. 16, GNA – A joint Police-civilian operation has arrested two illegal miners at Tweapease, a farming community in the Tano South Municipality of the Ahafo Region.

Mr Emmanuel Kwame Frimpong, the Tano South Municipal Chief Executive confirmed to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that some concerned youth of Techimantia assisted the Police to arrest the suspects who had been detained.

He said the suspects, name withheld for security reasons, were arrested at an illegal mining site at Tweapease, assuring the Municipal Security Committee’s dedication to stem illegal mining operations, popularly known as ‘galamsey’ in the municipality.

“We have upscale measures to fight against illegal mining or galamsey in the Tano South Municipality,” he assured and called for assistance from the members of the communities.

Mr Frimpong indicated that: “We will not succumb to the fight against galamsey activities which threaten our water bodies” and cautioned the youth in the area to guard against the temptation of engaging in the menace.

He regretted that large lands and food crops in the municipality had been destroyed with the polluted conditions of water bodies and streams being worsened due to illegal mining.

Mr Frimpong commended security operatives in the area for their dedication and selflessness towards fighting the galamsey.
