Tehran, Sept 20, (dpa/GNA) – Iran’s parliamentary speaker and chief negotiator in talks with the United States, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has said the Strait of Hormuz can only be reopened if Washington first fulfils all of Tehran’s conditions, according to a report by state news agency IRNA published on Sunday.
If this does not happen, there will be no return to the previous state of negotiations, Ghalibaf said, adding that Iran’s positions are clear and non-negotiable.
On Saturday, the head of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Mohsen Rezaee, had signalled Iran’s readiness to end the war with the US based on the framework agreement the two countries concluded in June. Rezaee named seven conditions for this in an interview with Arabic-language broadcaster Al Jazeera.
Among other things, Tehran is demanding that the US release frozen assets, end the war on all fronts and lift its blockade of Iranian ports and ships.
Iran’s leadership is also demanding that Washington refrain from interfering in the country’s internal affairs. These points are in line with the June agreement, which was intended to pave the way for a permanent deal.
Rezaee also demanded that the US fulfil all conditions before further negotiations could follow. Those talks are then also expected to address the future of Iran’s nuclear programme.
