Ho, Sept. 8, GNA – The Ho Municipal Assembly has rejected reports of an increase in tricycle, popularly known as “Can Do,” fares from GHS3.00 to GHS5.00 within the Municipality.
A press release signed by Mr Henry Yao Amesimeku, Municipal Coordinating Director, for the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Stephen Adom, said the Assembly did not support or endorse the reported fare increase.
The statement, dated September 7, said the MCE’s attention had been drawn to reports that some tricycle operators had increased their fares effective Monday, September 7.
It described the reported increase as unacceptable, particularly because there had been no consultation or approval from the appropriate authorities to justify such an adjustment.
The Assembly said it was engaging relevant stakeholders, including representatives of tricycle operators, to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the reported increase and work towards an amicable resolution in the interest of operators and commuters.
In the meantime, the Assembly urged commuters not to pay the reported GHS5.00 fare and encouraged them to continue paying the existing GHS3.00 fare pending any officially approved adjustment communicated by the appropriate authorities.
The MCE also called on tricycle operators to refrain from imposing the increased fare and exercise restraint while discussions with stakeholders were ongoing.
According to the statement, unilateral fare adjustments could create unnecessary tension and hardship for commuters and the public.
It said the Assembly remained committed to ensuring a fair and orderly transport system that considered the legitimate concerns of transport operators while protecting the interests and welfare of residents.
The Assembly assured the public that it would provide further updates following its engagements with the relevant stakeholders.
