Accra, Sept. 22, GNA – The Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) is today engaging about 500 schoolchildren at the University of Ghana Stadium, Legon, as part of efforts to promote Olympic values and create awareness ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.
The Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP), is expected to bring together children aged between nine and 16 years for an educational and sporting experience centered on the Olympic Movement.
The programme also formed part of the GOC’s activities to inspire the next generation through sport and familiarise young people with the principles and values associated with the Olympic Games.
A major feature of the event would be a 12-km walk and run around the athletic oval, during which the participants would take part in the symbolic passing of the Olympic torch.
The activity would provide the children with an opportunity to learn about the Olympic values of excellence, friendship and respect while encouraging them to embrace sports and healthy lifestyles.
The programme comes ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, scheduled for October 31 to November 13, which would be the first Olympic event to be held on African soil.
Ghana is expected to participate in the Games with 13 young athletes competing across several sporting disciplines.
Through the OVEP, the Ghana Olympic Committee would use the avenue as build-up to the historic Dakar Games to deepen Olympic education and inspire young Ghanaians to see sport not only as a platform for competition but also as a tool for education, friendship and personal development.
