Accra, Sept. 29, GNA – The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has identified 23 non-functional fire hydrants at the Ministries enclave in Accra.
It said out of 30 fire hydrants identified during an inspection, only five were fully functional with high water pressure, while two recorded low pressure.
The inspection was conducted by the Greater Accra Regional Fire Command in collaboration with Ghana Water Limited (GWL) to assess the availability and functionality of fire hydrants within the enclave.
A statement issued by the GNFS on Facebook said the exercise also revealed that the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) had no fire hydrant on its premises.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer II (ACFO II) Rashid Nisawu, Regional Fire Officer, advised the management of CAGD to work with the GNFS and GWL to facilitate the installation of a fire hydrant on its premises.
The inspection covered many government institutions, including the State Interests and Governance Authority (SIGA), Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT), Transport, Roads and Highways, and the Energy and Finance ministries.
The rest are Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Ghana Health Service (GHS), National Lottery Authority (NLA), the Court Complex and the Accra Sports Stadium.
The statement said the exercise formed part of a proactive initiative to identify, repair and restore non-functional hydrants ahead of the fire season to improve emergency response and protect lives and property.
