Accra, Sept. 7, GNA – The Ghana Water Ltd (GWL) has announced plans to resume spillage at the Weija Dam from Wednesday, September 9, 2026, as the water level at the dam continues to rise following heavy rainfall.
The Company said the water level had risen to 45.2 feet, following heavy rains upstream of the dam and continued rainfall within the catchment area of the Densu River and its tributaries.
A press release issued on Monday said the water level was approaching the 46-foot threshold, necessitating the resumption of spillage as a precautionary measure to safeguard the dam.
It therefore advised all residents living downstream of the Weija Dam to evacuate the area ahead of any eventuality.
Residents were also urged to remain alert, follow official evacuation directives and avoid activities that could expose them to danger.
GWL called on the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), District Assembly, Traditional Authorities, Assembly Members, Resident Associations and other relevant stakeholders to take the necessary precautionary measures and prepare for evacuation.
Communities likely to be affected include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt, Lower McCarthy Hill, Lower Weija, Bojo Beach and Ada Kopey, as well as surrounding communities.
The Company said it was closely monitoring the situation and would continue to provide updates, stressing that the safety of residents remained its priority.
It appealed to the public to cooperate with the relevant authorities and adhere to safety directives.
