General killed weeks after being awarded Hero of Russia decoration
Moscow, Sept 17. (dpa/GNA) – A Russian general has been killed in the war in Ukraine, just two and a half weeks after being awarded the title of Hero of Russia, Russian military bloggers and Chechen General Apti Alaudinov reported on Telegram.
The officer, Major General Anton Grunis, commander of the 4th Guards Motor Rifle Brigade, reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin at the beginning of July, that the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka had been captured. “A man with a Latvian name, born in Kazan, is fighting brilliantly,” Putin said at the time.
According to Ukrainian officials and Western military observers, the city is not fully under Russian control. On August 27, the general was awarded the honorary title Hero of Russia.
While the exact circumstances of Grunis’ death are not known, sources in Moscow and Kiev point to heavy Ukrainian attacks against Russian positions in the occupied territories of Luhansk and Donetsk over the weekend.
Almost 20 Russian generals have been killed since the Russian invasion in February 2022, according to official figures. According to unconfirmed reports, a three-star general was killed in late August, when a command post in Donetsk came under fire.
