Accra, Sept 1, GNA – Prince Ebrahim Sanyang, the Founder and Leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in The Gambia, has called for concerted efforts to end poverty in the West African country.
He said that poverty should not define the lives of the people.
Speaking at the official launch of the EFF Gambia on Saturday, August 29, 2026, Sanyang said the party was formed after years of listening to concerns of ordinary Gambians, particularly, unemployment, hunger and the rising cost of living.
“No family should go hungry because basic commodities have risen beyond its reach,” he said.
Mr Sanyang promised to establish Freedom Stores including a National Food Buffer Stock Company across the country to provide subsidised and affordable essential commodities, as well as prevent artificial shortages and help stabilise prices.
He said the party would also transform agriculture through the “1 Village, 1 Cooperative” initiative, revive produce marketing boards and improve farmers’ access to machinery, irrigation and financing.
The EFF leader further promised to establish a National Fishing Company to make fish more affordable while creating employment opportunities for young people in coastal communities.
“We have come with credible solutions and to restore politics to its highest purpose: the honest and courageous service of the people,” Sanyang said.
He said an EFF government would make zero unemployment a national mission by introducing the “1 Ward, 1 Industry” initiative, a 24-hour economy and enterprise grants for young people and women.
On education and healthcare, he pledged progressively free quality education, free primary, maternal and emergency healthcare, as well as “1 Village, 1 Clinic” and “1 Community, 1 Ambulance” initiatives.
Mr Sanyang also promised monthly relief packages for low-income households and a monthly D1,500 stipend for citizens aged 60 and above.
He said the party would ensure affordable access to water, electricity and internet, supported by a “1 Village, 1 Borehole” programme.
On public safety, he proposed “1 Community, 1 Police Station” and “1 District, 1 Fire Service”, while pledging to protect the country’s sovereignty and borders.
He said women and young people would be treated as equal partners in national development through investment in leadership, sports and skills training.
Mr Sanyang also pledged to fight corruption, strengthen public institutions and ensure public funds were transparently managed.
He outlined plans for major infrastructure projects, including a national railway, new international airport, national airline and shipping line, alongside affordable housing and industrial parks.
“No Gambian who works honestly should remain trapped in poverty. This is not charity from political leaders but the rightful return of the people’s resources to the people,” he declared.
Mr Sanyang also promised to ban the National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) in its current form if elected, accusing it of failing to provide reliable and affordable electricity.
He said the utility had become a symbol of inefficiency, erratic power supply and high bills that were affecting households and businesses.
He promised to replace the company with a modern and sustainable electricity system capable of providing stable and affordable power to households and industries.
Mr Sanyang said all EFF commitments would be properly costed, phased and monitored, adding that his government would only borrow to finance productive projects capable of creating wealth and jobs.
