Nkroful (W/R), Sept. 24, GNA – Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate in the 2024 presidential elections, has eulogised Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

Speaking at a grand durbar of chiefs and people of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area at Nkroful to mark the 117th birthday of Dr. Nkrumah, Ghana’s first president, Dr. Opoku-Prempeh said: “Nkroful gave Ghana a son, but gave Africa and the world a generational thinker, a liberation icon and an architect of nation building

Dr Opoku-Prempeh described the NkrumahFest not only as a birthday celebration, but as a moment to commune with the spirit of Ghana’s first President.

This year’s event, dubbed “A Journey to Nkroful,” was on the theme: “Nkrumah at 117: Celebrating His Enduring Legacy: Africa Must Unite or Perish.”

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh, former Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and running mate to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the opposition New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate in Ghana’s 2024 general elections, said while Ghanaians might disagree on governance, economic policy and development, some figures sit above partisan politics due to their foundational contributions to nationhood.

“We must fully recognise, respect and hold in high esteem the monumental role Dr. Kwame Nkrumah played in putting Ghana firmly on the global map,” he said.

He described Nkrumah’s vision as extensive, visionary and fearlessly Pan-African, adding that celebrating him in his home district was a duty incumbent on all Ghanaians regardless of political affiliation.

“True patriotism demands that we rise above partisan narrowness to honour those who laid the bedrock upon which our present democracy and national identity rest,” he stated.

He urged Ghanaians to recommit to ideals of selflessness, patriotism, national unity and developmental progress as they reflected on the 117th milestone.

Dr. Opoku-Prempeh commended Mr. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the Chief Convenor of the Journey to Nkroful and NkrumahFest, noting that his presence showed the festival was not a partisan rally but a national celebration.
