Accra, Sept. 2, GNA – The Dansoman Circuit Court on Wednesday struck out a case of alleged threat of death against former boxer Michael Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers.
The Court, presided over by Ms Nancy Teiko Searyoh, discharged Okai after the prosecution informed it that the complainant, Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), was no longer interested in pursuing the case.
Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, who led the prosecution, told the Court that the Greater Accra Regional Police Command had received a letter from Mr Ampofo Ankrah indicating his decision not to pursue the matter.
He said, based on the complainant’s position, the Police had instructed the prosecution to withdraw the case.
The Court consequently struck out the case as withdrawn and discharged Okai.
Okai, who was remanded into lawful custody at the previous sitting, was in the company of friends and relations when he left the court premises and sang a song.
The former boxer had been charged with threat of death and pleaded not guilty at the last sitting.
The prosecution said Okai had issued the alleged threat against Mr Ampofo Ankrah on social media, saying: “You, Yaw Ampofo, I will shoot you with a gun.”
It said the video containing the threat went viral on social media.
According to the prosecution, on August 18, 2026, the Greater Accra Regional Police Command intercepted the viral video, which showed Okai allegedly issuing the threat against Mr Ampofo Ankrah.
The complainant subsequently lodged a complaint with the Police, leading to Okai’s arrest on grounds of public safety and protection of life.
The prosecution said Okai admitted making the statement in his caution statement, explaining that he had made the comments out of anger.
