Bolgatanga, Sept. 18, GNA – The leadership of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives, Ghana (UPNMG), has donated GH¢5,000 to the Paediatric Oncology Unit of the Upper East Regional Hospital in Bolgatanga to support activities marking this year’s World Childhood Cancer Month.
The Paediatric Oncology Unit, in collaboration with the Childhood Cancer Society of Ghana, recently launched the hospital’s maiden Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, also known as Gold Ribbon Month.
The programme was held under the theme: “Demonstrating Impact: From Challenge to Change.”
Childhood Cancer Awareness Month is observed globally in September each year to honour young patients and survivors, while raising awareness about childhood cancer.
As part of the celebrations, the unit plans to undertake a number of activities, including radio discussions and other social engagements, to raise awareness about childhood cancer and the importance of seeking early treatment.
Mr Maurice Mikare, the Bolgatanga Municipal President of the UPNMG, who presented the cash amount on behalf of Mr Maxwell Oduro Yeboah, the National President of the Union, said the leadership deemed it necessary to partner the unit in executing its mandate.
“This will not be the end. We will continue to partner and work together to help these young ones. They are the future leaders,” Mr Mikare said.
He described the activities outlined by the unit as a “laudable plan” and said the union was interested in supporting efforts to raise awareness about childhood cancer.
Mr Roger Tandanbil, the Head of the Paediatric Oncology Unit, who received the donation, thanked the UPNMG leadership for the gesture and disclosed that the unit intended to establish a fund to support children diagnosed with cancer.
He appealed to non-government organisations, particularly child-focused organizations, philanthropists and benevolent individuals, to support the unit in its quest to raise awareness about childhood cancer in the region.
Mr Jonah Awinbe Ayamba, Assistant Head of the unit, said the donation from the UPNMG leadership would significantly boost the unit’s activities for the month.
“For the kind act of coming to support, it means a lot to us. This is a gesture we will hold dear to our hearts, and like you said, we hope that the partnership will not end here. Once it is a partnership, we will work together to the benefit of our clients and members,” he said.
