GABORONE, Sept. 17. (Xinhua/GNA) – Botswana has reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the ozone layer and transforming the southern African country’s cooling sector, a senior government official said Wednesday.
“As we celebrate 10 years of the Kigali Amendment, I call upon all of us to renew our commitment to sustainable cooling, environmental protection and gender inclusion,” said Patricia Mogomotsi, the deputy permanent secretary in the Botswanan Ministry of Environment and Tourism, at a ceremony held in Tlokweng on the outskirts of Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, commemorating the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer.
Mogomotsi called for continued strengthening of the policies, regulations and institutions necessary to fulfil Botswana’s commitments under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.
Chandapiwa Sebeela, the director at the department of Meteorological Services in the Botswanan Ministry of Environment and Tourism, said the commemoration means continuing to strengthen institutions, regulations, technical capacity and partnerships while accelerating the transition toward safe, energy efficient and climate-friendly cooling for Botswana.
This year’s theme, “Global action for a cooler planet – Celebrating 10 years of sustainable cooling under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol,” highlights the importance of collective action to protect the ozone layer while advancing sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions.
