Kumasi, Sept. 9, GNA – The Ashanti Regional Chapter of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has launched the 2025 Ashanti GJA Excellence Awards under the theme, “Celebrating Excellence, Championing Credibility: Journalism in the Age of AI.”
Mr Kofi Adu Domfeh, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the GJA, said at the launch that entries should consist of works published between January 1 and December 31, 2025.
The award categories include Best in Sports, Education, Arts and Entertainment, Business and Economy, Environmental Science, Climate Change, Crime and Court.
Other categories are Best Feature, Best Columnist and Best Feature Article, as well as the Kofi Badu Special Award, instituted in honour of veteran and retired journalists.
Mr Domfeh, speaking on the progress of the Association over the past year, said the executives embarked on a massive membership drive upon assuming office.
He said although they succeeded in getting dozens of journalists to register as members, the process of formally accepting the new members had not been completed due to ongoing reforms at the national level.
The Regional Chairman apologised to prospective members who had waited for a long time and appealed to them to exercise patience, assuring them that the process would be completed soon.
For this reason, he announced that applications for this year’s awards were open to all media professionals in the region, irrespective of their GJA membership status.
On the Ashanti Press Centre project, Mr Domfeh said it remained on course, explaining that through the benevolence of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Association had secured a space for the project.
He said the Regional Lands Commission was currently assisting with the requisite documentation to enable construction of the building to commence.
Mr Domfeh thanked Fidelity Bank Ghana and Access Bank for their financial support towards the Press Centre project and their contribution to the development of the media in the Ashanti Region.
He pledged the Association’s continued efforts to build the capacity of media professionals in the region, saying that over the past year, the executives had connected several journalists to various training opportunities.
