Agriculture credit falls as construction lending surges

‎Accra, Sept. 24, GNA –  Secured credit to Ghana’s agriculture sector fell sharply in the second quarter of 2026 as lending shifted to construction. 

‎The Collateral Registry Department of the Bank of Ghana reported that credit to Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing declined by 29.3 per cent quarter‑on‑quarter to GHS784.9 million, down from GHS1.11 billion in the first quarter. 

‎The Registry, in it’s latest report, said overall secured lending expanded by 57.5 per cent to GHS31.48 billion, with construction emerging as the largest recipient, attracting GHS9.89 billion or 31.4 per cent of total credit. 

‎The construction sector recorded a 147.3 per cent increase from GHS4 billion in the first quarter, accounting for nearly one‑third of all secured credit registered during the review period. 

‎Despite the quarterly contraction, agriculture posted an annual gain, rising 37.3 per cent from GHS571.6 million in the second quarter of 2025 to GHS784.9 million in the corresponding period of 2026. 

‎The report identified agriculture and Cottage Industries as the only sectors to record declines in the quarter, with Cottage Industries contracting by 25.5 per cent. 

‎Mining and Quarrying registered one of the sharpest increases, with secured credit rising by 645.8 per cent to GHS3.34 billion from GHS448.4 million in the previous quarter. 

‎Lending to the Electricity, Gas and Water sector also surged by 716.1 per cent to GHS1.13 billion. 

‎Commerce and Finance, Manufacturing, and Transport and Haulage were among the other sectors that recorded quarterly increases in secured credit.
