Golokuati (V/R), Sept. 29, GNA- The Afadzato South District Assembly, in partnership with the Ghana Railway Authority, has started fixing the deplorable inner roads at Golokuati towards Hohoe.
The rehabilitation works, which began last week, involve reshaping, gravelling and compaction of the affected stretches to improve vehicular movement.
The intervention is aimed at easing the difficulties faced by motorists and commuters who use the Golokuati township roads daily.
When the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the site on Monday, September 28, earth-moving equipment was seen grading portions of the road while workers filled potholes.
Some drivers who spoke to GNA acknowledged the efforts being taken by the authorities to address the poor road conditions.
They said the inner roads had become almost unmotorable, especially during the rainy season, affecting their operations.
Mr Kwame Dzokoto, a commercial driver who plies the Golokuati-Hohoe route, said the rehabilitation had brought some relief to drivers.
“We thank the Assembly for starting this work, but this is just the inner roads. Our main concern is the Eastern Corridor road,” he said.
Another driver, Mr Efo Kofi, said while they appreciated the district-level intervention, attention must be given to the Eastern Corridor road under the Government’s Big Push project.
The drivers expressed concern that work on the Eastern Corridor road had still not progressed significantly after two years in office of the government.
They said the deplorable nature of that stretch continued to increase travel time, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.
They appealed to the government to expedite work on the Eastern Corridor road, which they described as a critical economic route linking the Volta Region to the north.
Meanwhile, an official of the Afadzato South District Assembly Mr Daniel told GNA that the partnership with the Ghana Railway Authority was to ensure quick response to community road challenges.
He said the Assembly was committed to improving feeder and township roads while it continued to lobby central government for major highways.
He assured residents that the Golokuati inner roads project would be completed within schedule to ease movement ahead of the rainy season.
Residents have also welcomed the project, expressing hope that it would boost economic activities in Golokuati and surrounding communities.
