Johannesburg, 27 Sept. (dpa/GNA) – A total of 27 people were killed in two shootings within a few hours of each other in South Africa, police said on Sunday.
Seventeen people were shot dead in a pub in Gauteng province on Saturday evening.
In a separate incident near Cape Town on Sunday morning, 10 people were killed.
The first shooting was carried out by eight armed men, who opened fire on customers at a pub in Wedela, a mining town south-west of Johannesburg, police said.
The perpetrators first shot at people outside the venue then continued their attack inside.
They were said to have been armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. Police said the attackers searched some guests and took their mobile phones. They then fled in two vehicles.
Thirteen men and four women were pronounced dead at the scene. Fifteen people suffered gunshot wounds and were taken to hospital for treatment.
In the second attack at a barbecue restaurant in the Lwandle township near the coastal city of Cape Town, police said 10 people were killed and another 11 were injured.
In both cases, police said the motives for the attacks remain unclear.
No arrests have been made so far, and a manhunt is under way for the suspects.
