United Nations, Aug 24 (RIA Novosti/GNA) – Two UN peacekeepers were killed after an ambush on their patrol en route to Jonglei State, South Sudan, the world body’s mission to the African country said on Monday.
“The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) strongly condemns today’s ambush on its patrol traveling to Pajut, Jonglei state, by unidentified armed individuals,” UNMISS said in a statement shared via X. “Two peacekeepers were killed in the attack, while seven others were injured, including three peacekeepers.”
The deceased peacekeepers were Ethiopians, the mission said, further adding that two South Sudan National Police Service personnel and two civilian staff were also among the injured.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres strongly condemns the attack, spokesman Stephane Dujarric said during a press briefing when addressing the incident.
“We were trying to get a bit more details … These are part of regular patrols that the UN has been doing, trying to help with the constant insecurity in the area,” Dujarric said, further adding that according to details so far gathered, the attack appears to have been targeted.
Sudan has been engulfed in fierce fighting between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese armed forces since spring 2023. The Sudanese army recaptured the capital, Khartoum, in 2025.
Rebels intensified attacks in the south and west, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, and announced the formation of their own government in the territories under their control in April 2025.
Both sides accuse each other of killing civilians.
