Assin Fosu (C/R), Aug. 17, GNA – Two people have died and seven others sustained injuries in a head-on collision involving a Scienta vehicle and a Metro Mass Transit (MMT) bus at Assin Fosu in the Assin Central Municipality of the Central Region.
The accident occurred at about 1900 hours on Sunday, August 16, when the Scienta vehicle, travelling from Cape Coast, reportedly attempted to overtake another vehicle and collided head-on with the oncoming MMT bus, which was travelling from Kumasi.
The deceased were identified as the driver of the Scienta vehicle and one of its passengers. Five other occupants of the vehicle sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to hospital for treatment.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Wonder Lumor, Central North Regional Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), told the media that the vehicle being overtaken by the Scienta had slowed down to make a turn when the driver moved into the opposite lane, resulting in the collision.
The impact caused the MMT bus to veer off the road and crash into the perimeter wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School, causing a section of the wall to collapse.
ASP Lumor said three children walking along the roadside were struck by the bus and sustained injuries.
He said the children had been admitted to the St. Francis Xavier Hospital and were in stable condition.
Mr William Aboagye, driver of the MMT bus, said there were no fatalities among passengers on board the bus.
He recounted that the collision occurred suddenly when the Scienta vehicle entered the path of the bus while attempting to overtake another vehicle.
Some passengers on the MMT bus, who were traders travelling from Techiman to Mankessim, described the incident as a terrifying experience.
Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident.
