Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – Ghana’s services sector led economic growth in May 2026, expanding 7.2 per cent and accounting for 51 per cent of overall growth.
The sector outperformed industry and agriculture, which grew by 4.2 per cent and 3.6 per cent, respectively, as the economy recorded overall growth of 5.1 per cent.
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), in its latest Monthly Indicator of Economic Growth (MIEG), said the services sector remained the largest contributor to economic expansion during the month.
The services index rose to 125.0 in May 2026 from 116.5 a year earlier, indicating continued expansion in service-related activities.
Growth in the sector was driven mainly by the Information and Communication subsector, reflecting increased activity in digital technology, telecommunications and communication services.
Industry contributed 23.8 per cent to overall growth, while agriculture accounted for 21.2 per cent.
Net taxes contributed the remaining four per cent.
The services sector comprises wholesale and retail trade, transport and storage, information and communication, financial and insurance services, public administration and professional services.
The GSS said the performance underscored the growing contribution of services to Ghana’s economic growth, particularly the increasing role of information and communication activities.
It, however, stressed the need to sustain growth in industry and agriculture to support a more balanced and inclusive economic expansion.
