YEREVAN, Aug. 4 (Xinhua/GNA) – Armenia’s National Assembly elected Ruben Rubinyan as its speaker, in a secret ballot on Monday.
A total of 91 of the parliament’s 105 lawmakers took part in the vote. Rubinyan, the sole candidate nominated by the ruling Civil Contract party, was elected with 63 votes in favor and 28 against.
The opposition Armenia Alliance boycotted the vote, while the Strong Armenia alliance said before the vote that it would oppose Rubinyan’s candidacy.
The 36-year-old lawmaker previously served as deputy speaker of the National Assembly. He also served as Armenia’s special envoy for talks with Türkiye on normalizing bilateral relations.
Rubinyan’s election came after the June 7 parliamentary elections, in which the ruling Civil Contract party retained its majority in the National Assembly.
