Kumasi, Aug. 11, GNA – The Ghana Police Service and MTN Ghana have renewed their partnership to promote driver compliance, enhance road safety awareness and reduce road traffic crashes across the country.
The initiative, launched last year as part of the traffic management framework, seeks to equip corporate drivers with knowledge of road traffic regulations, while encouraging the integration of digital compliance and enforcement systems into fleet management.
The partnership was reaffirmed at a specialised training workshop organised by the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for MTN drivers in Kumasi.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Alexander Kwaku Obeng, Director in charge of Administration, Research and Training at the MTTD, said the collaboration had recorded positive results since its inception.
ACP Obeng said: “Since launching the initiative last year, we have observed enhanced vehicle safety standards and maintained a zero-crash record among MTN’s fleet.
“Given these positive results, it is only natural that we continue pushing for higher standards”
He said the training was designed to equip drivers with up-to-date knowledge of evolving traffic regulations, including digital compliance requirements, while reinforcing their individual responsibility for road safety.
He underscored partnerships between the Police and corporate institutions as being important in promoting public safety and enabling law enforcement agencies to adopt smarter and more data-driven approaches to traffic management.
Mr Kwasi Bonnah Otuo Serebour, the Acting Director of the Inspectorate Division of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), commended MTN for taking a proactive approach to driver safety.
He called for a shift from reactive measures to preventive strategies in addressing road traffic crashes, stressing the need for organisations to prioritise driver education and vehicle maintenance.
Mr Serebour said road crashes continued to impose significant human and economic costs on the country and urged other corporate organisations to emulate MTN by incorporating strict vehicle maintenance and driver training protocols into their operations.
The Kumasi workshop forms part of a nationwide programme expected to benefit more than 300 MTN drivers as the initiative is rolled out across regional capitals in the coming year.
The programme is expected to further strengthen corporate driver compliance, improve fleet safety standards and contribute to efforts to reduce road traffic crashes nationwide.
