Accra, Aug 06, GNA – The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (MEST) has donated assorted prayer and other items to the Tse Addo Central Mosque in Accra in memory of its late Minister, Dr Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, on the first anniversary of his death.
Dr Mohammed was among eight people who perished in the helicopter crash that occurred at Sikaman-Brofoyedru in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region on August 6, 2025.
The donation, described as part of efforts to sustain the late minister’s legacy of charity and devotion to Islam, included 200 copies of the Holy Qur’an, 50 prayer mats, 50 ablution containers, 30 school bags, 50 packs of bottled water and 10 boxes of biscuits.
Mr Yusif Sulemana, Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, who presented the items on behalf of Mr Emmanuel Amarh Kofi Buah, caretaker Minister of Environment, Science and Technology, said the gesture formed part of activities marking the first anniversary of the late minister’s passing and was intended to continue the charity he championed during his lifetime.
He described the late Dr Mohammed as a devout Muslim, a humble leader and a man whose exemplary character inspired many people within and outside government.
He recounted their close relationship in Parliament, where they served together on the Public Accounts Committee, and spoke of Dr Mohammed’s unwavering commitment to worship, particularly during Ramadan and while performing Umrah.
Mr Sulemana said the late minister consistently encouraged others to deepen their faith, adding that his melodious recitation of the Holy Qur’an and dedication to prayer had left lasting impressions on people, including non-Muslims.
Mr Sulemana, who personally donated a cash of GH¢20,000 towards upkeep of the mosque, noted that the true measure of a person’s life was not the number of years lived but the legacy of good deeds and service left behind.
“The best way to remember him is to continue the good works he started,” he said, urging family members, friends and colleagues to support charitable causes such as donating Qur’ans and assisting places of worship.
He said the Tse Addo Central Mosque was selected because it was where the late minister regularly brought his children to study the Holy Qur’an and deepen their knowledge of Islam.
Mr Sulemana announced that additional commemorative activities would continue, including a special prayer session to be led by the National Chief Imam in honour of the late minister.
Receiving the items, Alhaji Zakaria Suleman, Chief Imam of the Tse Addo Central Mosque, expressed gratitude to the ministry and all those who contributed to the donation.
He said the mosque already had more than 400 copies of the Holy Qur’an, many of which had previously been donated by the late Dr Mohammed, reflecting his longstanding commitment to supporting Islamic education.
The Chief Imam prayed for Allah’s blessings upon the donors, the family of the late minister and the nation.
He urged Muslims to strive for righteous living, saying what mattered most was not wealth, status or longevity, but how one ended life’s journey in faith and obedience to their maker.
