Israel kills second Hamas commander in Gaza in as many days

Gaza/Tel Aviv, Aug. 13 (dpa/GNA) – Israel’s military said it has again killed a Hamas member in the Gaza Strip, identifying the deceased man as the company commander of the Hamas military wing in the Khan Younis area.

The military said the man had been preparing attacks against Israeli soldiers. Israeli media reported that this was the second Israeli attack of its kind in the Gaza Strip within two days since targeted killings were halted at the beginning of August, on instructions from the political leadership.

Medical sources on the ground said a Palestinian was killed in the city of Khan Younis in the south of the Gaza Strip. Eyewitnesses confirmed that he was a Hamas commander.

Under the Board of Peace, founded by US President Donald Trump, Hamas is to disarm and Israel is to stop its targeted attacks on Palestinians in the coastal strip.

Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has rejected the plan. Media reports said Israel nevertheless stopped such attacks under US pressure.

Since the beginning of August, Israel’s Chief of the General Staff, Eyal Zamir, has reportedly had to approve attacks in the Gaza Strip in advance, unless there is an immediate danger to soldiers.

There had been no more targeted Israeli attacks until the military reported one again on Wednesday. It said the target was also a commander of the Islamist Hamas.
