Health alert: Wenchi butchers singe slaughtered animals with used car tyres

By Nana Anfreh Damanata, GNA

Wenchi (Bono), Aug. 14, GNA – Dr Samuel Obiri, an environmentalist, has condemned the practice of butchers at the Wenchi Abbatoir in the Bono Region, who use secondhand car tyres to singe slaughtered animals for public sale.

He said the practice had serious health hazards, justifying that car tyres contained deadly toxicants.

Dr Obiri’s condemnation followed concerns raised by some residents around the Wenchi abattoir about the practice where the butchers used the car tyres to singe cattle, goats and sheep.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Obiri cautioned the butchers to refrain from the unhealthy practice and to guarantee the health safety of consumers.

“That practice has a serious health hazard because the car tyres have toxic chemicals that can cause cancer,” he stated.

Dr Obiri noted that consumers of this unwholesome meat could be exposed to carbon monoxide, quantities of iron, zinc, copper, lead, and even mercury.
