Washington/Tel Aviv, Aug 2 (dpa/GNA) – Palestinian militant group Hamas, has agreed to disarm and support the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, according to US sources and people familiar with discussions within the US-backed Board of Peace.
Through mediators, Hamas approved “the final text of the roadmap as it was presented to them in our last mediating session”, several people familiar with the matter said. That text included a provision calling for the “decommissioning of weapons,” they added.
The comments came shortly after US President Donald Trump said the US-initiated Board of Peace, had reached an agreement on the “complete disarmament” of Hamas in Gaza. Further details of the plan still need to be worked out in the coming weeks, the sources said.
“I think we can see progress in the next month or two,” a senior government official said. Another source familiar with the discussions said the overall process could take between 200 and 350 days, adding that a more precise timeline would only be possible once a “timeline for each of these phases” had been agreed.
Trump’s Board of Peace has been criticized by opponents as a partisan alternative to the United Nations. Its founding members include the United States, Israel, Egypt, Qatar and Turkey.
