Accra, Aug. 16, GNA – Information Technology (IT) Coordinators of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Greater Accra have received advanced digital skills training.
The training focused on software, networking, data management and cybersecurity. It was aimed at improving technology management in schools.
Mr Wisdom Larry Quarme-Doe, Chief Executive Officer of UniWIZ Foundation, a non-profit organisation that provides and builds ICT centres and electronic libraries for schools, said the training would strengthen the capacity of IT Coordinators to support Information and Communication Technology (ICT) education in schools.
He said stronger software and networking skills would improve their ability to perform administrative duties, manage student information and support classroom activities.
“The basic reason for this is to empower coordinators who are taking care of our children in the schools as far as ICT education is concerned,” he said.
Mr Joel Duah, Senior Software Engineer at Intellite, an IT firm that develops software for companies, government agencies and Non-Governmental Organisations, said the programme was designed to give educators practical software and networking skills.
He said the skills would enable the coordinators to work more efficiently and use appropriate digital tools to manage student and staff records.
“This training programme will help coordinators acquire software skills and tools that will help them manage student and staff data effectively,” he said.
Mr Enoch Appiah, Greater Accra Regional Information and Communication Technology Coordinator, said the training would familiarise participants with Microsoft and networking tools.
He said the tools could be used for simulations, institutional data protection and cybersecurity support.
Mr Appiah said the skills would also enable the coordinators to establish and manage computer networks more effectively.
He said this could create centralised systems to improve access to resources and support technology-based research.
“In this era, everything is basically technology, so it is important for them to have this opportunity,” he added.
Mr Appiah said the Government had introduced initiatives to support schools and make Information and Communication Technology education more accessible.
He cited the provision of tablets to students to facilitate research and improve their understanding of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Some coordinators who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) described the training as practical and useful.
They said it had refreshed their networking knowledge and exposed them to new approaches to software use and data management.
They said the skills would improve their ability to provide technical support and manage digital resources in their institutions.
The second edition of the Advanced Digital Skills Training was held on the theme, “Advancing Ghana’s Education Technology Workforce.”
The programme was organised to strengthen the technical and administrative capacity of IT Coordinators.
It also sought to improve data management, cybersecurity and technology-enabled teaching and learning in schools.
