Accra, Aug. 26, GNA – The Government has declined a proposed GH¢20 million donation from MTN Ghana to support Ghanaians affected by xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
It said adequate financial arrangements had already been made to fund the evacuation and reintegration of affected Ghanaians.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday, said the Government appreciated the offer but could not accept it because funding had already been secured for the ongoing humanitarian exercise.
The Ministry said it became aware of media reports that MTN Ghana intended to donate GH¢20 million to Ghanaian victims of the attacks following an interview reportedly granted by Dr Ishmael Yamson, Chairman of the MTN Ghana Board.
“The Government of Ghana commends MTN for the offer, however, we respectfully decline,” it said.
The statement said the Government’s position had been communicated directly to the MTN Board Chairman and Chief Executive Officer when they called on the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on August 14, 2026.
It said the Government remained committed to providing financial support for the evacuation
and reintegration of Ghanaians brought back from harm’s way.
The Ministry said that in the interest of transparency and accountability, the Government would provide a comprehensive account of the total cost of the evacuation exercise after its completion.
It also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to creating a conducive business environment for international brands operating in Ghana, irrespective of their country of origin.
“The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the Ministry said.
The development follows xenophobic attacks in parts of South Africa that raised concerns about the safety of Ghanaian nationals and other foreign Africans living in the country.
The Government continues to evacuate distressed Ghanaians who have registered with the Ghana High Commission in Pretoria.
