Accra, Aug. 20, GNA – The Ghana Boxing Interim Management Committee (GBIMC) has called on police to investigate, arrest and prosecute boxer Michael Nii Ayitey Okai, popularly known as Ayitey Powers, over alleged death threats made against Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Director General of National Sports Authority (NSA).
In a statement signed by its chairman, Mr Samir Captan, the committee condemned what it described as threats directed at the NSA Boss, saying such actions were criminal and unacceptable.
“It is to be noted that threatening the life of a public official using social media is not only cowardly but criminal,” the statement said.
The GBIMC alleged that Ayitey Powers had a history of online verbal abuse, including insults directed at Captan and the committee’s vice chairman, former world boxing champion Professor Azumah Nelson.
The committee said it had formally requested the Ghana Police Service to urgently investigate the boxer and pursue appropriate legal action.
It also announced the immediate commencement of disciplinary proceedings against Ayitey Powers as part of its mandate to restructure and regulate boxing in Ghana.
“Ghana boxing should not be held hostage by any intimidation, thuggery or impunity,” the statement said.
The committee appealed to stakeholders and supporters of boxing to help restore discipline, respect and honour to the sport.
