Foiled attempted robbery: Suspects had targeted three banks  

Accra, Aug. 13, GNA – Police have foiled an attempted robbery targeting three banks at Labone in Accra, resulting in the arrest of one suspect and the death of two others. 

The targeted banks were GCB Bank, Ecobank and Zenith Bank. 

The Ghana Police Service, in an update on Facebook, said it received intelligence at about 10:45 a.m. on August 13, 2026, that a gang was preparing to attack the three banks. 

“A police team was immediately deployed to Labone where the gang members were spotted in their vehicles parked close to the banks. 

Upon sighting the Police, one of the vehicles sped off in an attempt to escape. The Police gave them a chase and arrested suspect Augustine Okechuku Maazi.” 

The Police said the other occupant of the vehicle escaped, while occupants of a second vehicle also attempted to flee amid gunfire. 

“The other occupant however managed to escape. The robbers in the second vehicle also tried to escape amidst firing. The Police engaged them in a shoot out resulting in the death of two suspects.” 

It said two vehicles and a blow pistol were recovered from the scene. 

The vehicles were a Toyota Highlander, registration number GS-1434-18, and a Hyundai Tucson, registration number GS-7915-17. 

The Police said Mr Augustine Okechuku Maazi was in custody assisting with investigations, while the bodies of the deceased suspects had been deposited at the morgue for preservation, identification and autopsy. 

The Ghana Police Service commended the response team for successfully foiling the planned robbery. 

“The Service is also grateful to members of the public who continue to share credible information on criminal activities with the police.”
