Hohoe (V/R), Aug. 7, GNA – The Kpando Circuit Court has sentenced a 31-year-old trader, Stella Amedzorme, to three years’ imprisonment for abducting an eight-month-old baby at the Kpando Market in the Volta Region.
Amedzorme was first arraigned before the court on July 20 and remanded into police custody.
She reappeared before the court on August 3, pleaded guilty to the offence and was convicted on her own plea.
A statement signed by Inspector Felix Kwao, Public Relations Officer of the Volta North Regional Police Command, and copied to the Ghana News Agency, said the case was reported on July 17 after the baby’s mother, Gloria Xagbe, 21, informed the police that she had briefly left her son in the care of the convict, a fellow market trader, while she went to purchase packaging bags.
According to the statement, upon her return, both the child and the convict were nowhere to be found.
Inspector Kwao said acting on intelligence, the police arrested Amedzorme on July 18 at Toviate, a suburb of Kwamekrom in the Oti Region, and successfully rescued the baby.
He said during investigations, the convict admitted taking the child on the instructions of her fiancé, who remains at large.
Inspector Kwao said the baby was rescued unharmed, adding that efforts were underway to arrest the convict’s fiancé to assist with investigations.
He said the command remained committed to protecting lives and property, particularly children, and urged parents and guardians to exercise caution when leaving their children in the care of others.
