Fiapre (Bono), Aug. 29, GNA -The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) Ghana has advocated an integrated and sustainable approach to improve the nation’s transport system.
They said the nation ought to be proactive towards addressing the transport sector challenges of congestion, deplorable roads, crashes and fatalities as well as limited accessibility.
The CILT made the call in a communique at the closing session of the 2026 Logistics and Transport Conference and Annual General Meeting held at Fiapre, near Sunyani.
Attended by about 300 professionals from public and private sectors, the three-day conference was on the theme: “Transforming Ghana’s transport infrastructure for inclusive and sustainable growth.”
A copy of the communique made available to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) said the nation required an inclusive transportation system, saying that the transport infrastructure ought to improve equal access to healthcare, education, markets and workplaces.
It noted that about 56.7 per cent of the nation’s population was living in urban areas, hence the need to improve urban transport accessibility.
That was critical to social inclusion and economic growth, particularly for children, the aged, low-income communities, and People with Disabilities, it said.
The communique indicated that road expansion alone would provide only a short-term relief for the transport infrastructure system.
It added that congestion linked to vehicle demand, land-use patterns, poor traffic operations, and weak law enforcement, remained a major challenge in the sector.
The communique raised concern about the growing trend of national road crashes and called for a collective approach to bring these under control.
It said the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) approach remained a key solution to addressing emerging challenges in the transport sector.
“Intelligent transport systems like the introduction and use of Artificial Intelligence, together with better integration of existing transport modes and professional management of transport units, will also help address the challenges,” it said.
The Communique advocated better road safety operations and accessible transport vehicles as well as implementation and enforcement of existing transport policies and professional standards to enhance national road safety.
Earlier, Dr Ekow Ghansah, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer, in-charge of Technical Services for the Public Procurement Authority (PPA) asked the Institute to persevere and consistently advocate revolutions for effective management of road congestion.
He called on higher academic institutions to review their curriculum in helping to find lasting solutions to challenges in the transport sector.
Dr Ghansah stated that the educational curriculum must be reviewed to align with evolving issues in the Logistics and Supply Chain sector.
