Accra, Aug. 14, GNA – The Black Queens of Ghana came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire in a vital FIFA Women’s World Cup play-off match, keeping their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 tournament alive.
The Black Queens had a difficult start to the encounter and fell behind as Akissi Mikouame Konan converted a fourth-minute penalty to hand Côte d’Ivoire an early lead.
Despite enjoying periods of possession and moving the ball well, the Black Queens struggled to create clear-cut chances in the opening half, allowing the Ivorians to take their advantage into the break.
Ghana returned from halftime with renewed purpose and eventually found a breakthrough in the 59th minute when Princess Marfo scored the equaliser.
The goal lifted the confidence of the Black Queens, who began to dictate play while remaining wary of Côte d’Ivoire’s threat on the counterattack.
Their pressure was rewarded in the 72nd minute when Ghana won a penalty. Josephine Bonsu stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to complete the comeback.
The Black Queens then produced a disciplined defensive display in the closing stages to protect their lead and secure a hard-fought victory.
The result keeps Ghana firmly in contention for a place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup as the Black Queens continue their qualification campaign.
