Accra, Aug. 12, GNA – The Attorney General (AG) has opposed Bernard Antwi Boasiako’s notice for an order for bail pending an appeal.
The AG denied each allegation of facts contained in the affidavit in support of the motion saying the motion discloses no reasonable chance of success.
In the affidavit in opposition, the AG held that the applicant constituted “significant flight risk.”
The AG’s motion said: “The Materiality of the risk that the appellant will flee is enhanced by the fact that the Applicant is standing criminal trial in other matters in respect of which he, if convicted, stands to be imprisoned for a considerable number of years.”
He debunked the assertion that the appellant’s physical presence would facilitate counsel preparation for appeal.
According to the AG, the appellant application discloses “no special or exceptional circumstances to warrant an order admitting him (the Appellant) to bail pending an appeal.
The AG prayed the court to exercise its discretion to “summarily dismiss the present application.”
Boasiako, also known as Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was jailed 20 years by the High Court for facilitating illegal mining activities on a concession at Samreboi in the Western Region.
He and his firm, Akonta Mining Company Limited, as well as one Kwame Antwi, who is at large, were tried.
Boasiako, an entrepreneur, currently serving his sentence, filed for bail pending an appeal saying his application has a chance of success.
He held that on the face of the record, the whole trial was wrong in law.
The High Court is expected to hear the motion on notice for bail pending an appeal on August 19, 2026.
