Bekwai (Ash), Aug. 11, GNA – The Ashanti South Media Caucus, a group of journalists assigned to cover events and stories from the Ashanti South Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service, has honoured four senior police officers for their outstanding contributions to peace, security and crime prevention in the region.
The officers are Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander; Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Martin Amoah Kpentey, Bekwai District Police Commander; Chief Superintendent Richmond Bonsu, Bekwai Divisional Commander; and Superintendent Stephen Antwi, Ashanti South Regional Crime Officer.
Mr Francis Owusu, President of the Media Caucus, speaking at the presentation ceremony, said the officers were being recognised for their professionalism, dedication and selfless service in protecting lives and property.
He noted that the officers had contributed significantly to maintaining law and order, combating crime and promoting peace and stability within the Ashanti South jurisdiction and the wider Ashanti Region.
Mr Owusu commended the officers for their commitment to public safety and expressed the hope that the recognition would inspire them to continue serving diligently.
He said the honour was in appreciation of their outstanding service, dedication to duty and contribution to peace and security in the region.
Receiving the citations on behalf of the beneficiaries, DCOP Nyaaba expressed gratitude to the Media Caucus, describing the recognition as timely and motivating.
“This is a timely citation for all of us, and we want to say thank you to the Regional Media Caucus of the Ashanti South region for recognising our hard work,” he said.
He noted that the relationship between the Police Service and the media remained cordial, adding that regular engagements between the two institutions had contributed to peace and stability in the Ashanti South jurisdiction and beyond.
DCOP Nyaaba said crime levels were relatively high when the command assumed office, but sustained police operations had led to significant improvements in security.
“When we took over, the crime level was a bit high, but with my men, we have fought the criminals, and as you can all testify, the jurisdiction and the entire Ashanti region are safe,” he said.
He said the security situation had since become relatively calm and warned criminals against engaging in unlawful activities within the jurisdiction.
The Regional Commander announced that the command had received approval from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to extend its operations beyond its immediate boundaries within the region whenever necessary.
He also commended the media for its role in disseminating information on the activities and achievements of the Police Service.
DCOP Nyaaba described the citations as legacies that the officers would cherish long after their retirement from the service.
“These citations given to us are legacies we are going to leave behind. Eventually, we shall all retire, and having these in our rooms, people can read them and witness what we came to do in the Ashanti South Command,” he said.
In a citation presented to DCOP Nyaaba, the Caucus commended him for his exemplary leadership, professionalism and unwavering commitment to maintaining law and order following the elevation of the Ashanti South Police Command to a regional command.
The citation noted that under his leadership, the command had recorded notable successes in crime prevention, the arrest of suspected criminals, and the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and other offensive weapons.
It further praised his strategic leadership, which had strengthened intelligence-led policing and enhanced public confidence in the Ghana Police Service.
The Caucus also recognised DCOP Nyaaba’s commitment to combating illegal mining, popularly known as “galamsey”, noting that his coordinated efforts had contributed to the protection of the environment, water bodies and the livelihoods of residents.
