Manso Akwasiho (Ash), Aug. 13, GNA – The Amansie South District Assembly has intensified efforts to promote environmental cleanliness with a community clean-up exercise in three communities as part of the National Sanitation Exercise.
The exercise was held in Manso Akwasiso, Kumpɛse and Nyankomase, where residents, assembly officials and community leaders joined in desilting gutters and cleaning public spaces.
As part of the exercise, the Assembly donated 15 dustbins to the three communities and urged residents to use them properly and desist from indiscriminate disposal of refuse.
Mr Benjamin Marfo, the District Chief Executive speaking after the exercise, said it formed part of the Assembly’s efforts to support the government’s national sanitation agenda and promote clean and healthy communities.
He urged residents to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and making proper use of the dustbins provided.
The DCE also cautioned illegal miners operating along the newly rehabilitated Akwasiso–Koninase road to stop their activities, warning that the Assembly would take action against anyone whose operations threatened the integrity of the road.
He said the government and the Asanko Gold Ghana, had invested significant resources in rehabilitating the road, stressing that, the Assembly would not allow illegal mining activities to undermine the investment.
Mr Marfo further appealed to traditional leaders and other stakeholders not to intervene on behalf of illegal miners arrested for engaging in mining activities along the road.
He said the Assembly was determined to protect the road from activities that could cause damage to the newly rehabilitated infrastructure.
Nana Kwaakye Gyimah, the Chief of Akwasiho, commended the Assembly for organising the clean-up exercise and donating dustbins to the communities.
He assured the Assembly that the traditional leadership would ensure that the dustbins were protected and used for their intended purpose.
He urged residents to dispose of their refuse properly and warned that anyone caught dumping waste indiscriminately would face sanctions.
Nana Gyimah encouraged residents to make good use of the dustbins to help maintain a clean and healthy environment.
The chief also pledged the community’s support for the Assembly’s efforts to curb illegal mining activities along the Akwasiso–Koninase road.
Mr Stephen Nsiah Kess, Assembly Member for the Akwasiso Electoral Area, commended the Assembly for the sanitation exercise and appealed to the government and the Ashanti Regional Minister, to help address the community’s electricity challenges.
He said parts of the community had been experiencing power problems for the past three months because the existing transformer could not adequately serve the growing population.
Mr Nsiah Kess therefore appealed for the provision of a new transformer to improve electricity supply to residents.
He also disclosed that the community had initiated the construction of a community centre through a self-help project, which had reached the lintel level.
He appealed to the government, the Assembly and other stakeholders to support the community to complete the project.
