Accra, July 27, GNA – The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has directed all regional hospitals to conduct hepatitis B and C screening as part of activities marking World Hepatitis Day on July 28.
The nationwide exercise is intended to promote early detection of infections, improve access to treatment and increase public awareness of viral hepatitis.
The GHS announced the directive ahead of this year’s observance, which is being marked under the local theme: “Know Your Status.”
The Service urged the public to undergo hepatitis B and C screening and ensure that newborns receive the hepatitis B birth-dose vaccine within 24 hours of birth.
It also encouraged the public to help combat misinformation and stigma associated with viral hepatitis by sharing accurate health information.
According to global health estimates, about 287 million people were living with chronic hepatitis B or C in 2024, many of whom were unaware of their infection because the disease often remains asymptomatic until significant liver damage occurs.
The estimates indicate that viral hepatitis caused about 1.3 million deaths worldwide in 2024, although hepatitis B can be prevented through vaccination and hepatitis C can be cured with effective treatment.
The GHS said the screening exercise would facilitate early diagnosis, referral for treatment and public education on hepatitis prevention.
World Hepatitis Day is observed annually on July 28 to mobilise governments, health institutions and communities to accelerate efforts to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat.
The GHS urged Ghanaians to take advantage of the screening exercise at regional hospitals and other designated health facilities, emphasising the importance of early diagnosis and treatment.
