Washington/Tehran (dpa) – The US military said it had completed retaliatory strikes against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), after two US soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack.
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said on X that during the eighth consecutive night of strikes, its forces hit Iranian military coastal surveillance and air defence facilities, maritime capabilities and missile and drone storage sites. “American military assets also targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces that launched attacks against U.S. service members in Jordan on July 17,” it added.
Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported early on Sunday, that at least six missiles had struck areas on the outskirts of Iran’s Qeshm Island in the Gulf during the latest strikes. It gave no further details.
Earlier, the military said it had begun a new wave of airstrikes at 1:30 am local time in Iran on Sunday (2200 GMT Saturday), adding that the operation aimed to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
The strikes were also intended to “swiftly punish” the IRGC, which CENTCOM said carried out attacks on US troops in Jordan.
The US military said on Saturday, that two soldiers were killed on Friday, while US and allied forces were defending against Iranian missile and drone attacks in Jordan. One additional soldier remained missing, CENTCOM said.
The war began on February 28, 2026, when the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran.
