Two dead in plane crash in Austria

Vienna, July 12, (dpa/GNA) – The pilot of a light aircraft and a passenger have died in a crash in Austria, the emergency services reported on Sunday.

The accident occurred near Gaming in the east of the country, a spokesman for the Lower Austrian emergency operations centre told dpa.

Police said a teenage girl and another male passenger were rescued alive from the crash site in a mountain forest. According to the regional emergency services, both were seriously injured. The police have not yet provided any information on the flight path or the possible cause of the accident.

Detectives from the police force and state aviation accident experts have launched an investigation. The crash site, situated in difficult-to-access terrain, posed major challenges for the emergency services. As a firefighter explained to Austrian broadcaster ORF, rescue workers had to cut their way through the undergrowth using chainsaws and other equipment and construct a makeshift crossing over a stream in order to reach the aircraft.

Gaming is a small rural municipality in the federal state of Lower Austria. The village is situated near the Ötscher mountain, which is just under 1,900 metres high.
