New York, July 19 (dpa/GNA) – Poor air quality and weather conditions in New York, disrupted Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s travel plans for Sunday’s Argentina-Spain World Cup final.
Sheinbaum’s flight from Cancún to New York was initially delayed by two hours on Saturday, and then cancelled altogether. The reason was smoke hanging over New York, caused by wildfires in Canada over recent days.
According to the Mexican government, the president instead flew to New York overnight into Sunday, aboard an aircraft operated by Mexico’s Defence Ministry.
Sheinbaum had earlier received a surprise invitation from US President Donald Trump, to attend the final in East Rutherford, New Jersey. She will attend alongside the leader of the third World Cup host nation, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
